Search for fossil fuels alternatives needed

Times Union | October 5, 2014 | LTE by Chris Bystroff

In response to Paul J. Burgdorf’s false characterization of rail oil critics as “not in my backyard environmentalists” in his letter (“Rail oil critics ignore use of fossil fuel products,” Sept. 28), it would be more accurate to say their position is “not in anyone’s backyard.”

Most green activists I know take the position that we have to move away from fossil fuels, not simply move fossil fuels away from us. We depend on oil for heat and transportation right now, but that does not invalidate the search for alternatives.

Indeed, the safety issues being brought to our attention by PAUSE (People of Albany United for Safe Energy) add to the many reasons to find alternatives for fossil fuels. Other reasons include climate change, oil spills, ground water pollution, peak oil.

As long as we point the finger and cry “hypocrite,” as long as we defend old dirty jobs over new green jobs, we linger on the wrong side of history.
