Steck outlines areas potentially at risk for an oil train accident

Times Union | March 26, 2015 | Post by Matthew Hamilton

Assemblyman Phil Steck is outlining numerous Capital Region locations as at risk for an oil train accident as he renews calls for stabilization of oil traveling through the region en route to refineries.

The Colonie Democrat released a memo on Wednesday morning outlining where previous rail accidents have occurred in Albany, Schenectady and Montgomery counties, which he says shows “the inherent risks of transporting highly volatile explosive oil through densely-populated residential areas.”

“The risk is far too great to continue this practice without stringent safeguards in place,” Steck said in a statement.

The assemblyman highlights both rail accidents and track and oil tanker defects recorded by the state in the three counties between 2013 and 2014.

Oil moving across the United States and down through Canada has been flowing through the Albany area at an increased clip in recent years. Albany and its port are a convergence point for trains coming down through the Adirondacks and across New York from its western border.

Very proud of my assemblymember Phil Steck for being proactive on this vital issue. We’ve been working for over a year to bring people’s attention to this potentially catastrophic situation and stop oil by rail before there’s a major derailment here in Albany County.
