Tonko releases statement on EU crude oil proposal

ALBANY, N.Y. - Congressman Paul Tonko has released a statement on a proposal that would remove the ban on crude oil exports.

Tonko released the statement after negotiations with the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership were made public. Negotiations suggested the United States to lift the ban on crude oil exports. The full statement is below.

“To suggest we should toss out a decades-old ban on crude exports is particularly ironic during the height of the summer driving season. For decades, Americans were told that if we just drilled more we would see lower prices at the pump. We are now the top oil and gas producing nation and yet gas prices remain stubbornly high. Ending the export ban will place even more risk on consumers while only benefitting big oil companies and their profit columns.

Laws governing our national energy policy have critical implications for our economy, national security, environment and climate and should not be altered without a full debate from the House and Senate.

Despite technological advances and the shale revolution, our current abundance of oil and gas will not last forever. Exporting these resources as soon as we recover them will only push us closer to another energy crisis, even if it is further down the road. This is not the type of strategic, long-term thinking required of a sophisticated society and economy. We must use this opportunity to put forward a comprehensive national energy policy that helps our businesses grow, cuts energy costs for consumers, and weans the nation off fossil fuel dependence.”

We use about 18 million barrels of oil per day and produce only 10 or 11 million. Just from an economic standpoint, it makes no sense to export oil.
