In Albany, a neighborhood struggling against poverty now faces a direct and escalating threat from trains carrying oil to port. Local politicians and environmental groups have identified and challenged this threat, as have people living in the impacted community, and important gains have been won. But differences in identified goals and tactics also pose a challenge to a the long term strength and effectiveness of this grassroots effort. In this workshop, we will discuss possible elements of a strategic plan that respects the leadership, needs and concerns of those most impacted, while also respecting those who recognize the issue as part of a larger fight against state and national policies that profit big oil while undermining the health of citizens and the planet.
