Catastrophe will occur, guaranteed

Times Union | May 29, 2014 | LTE by Steve Trimm

The sheer number of Bakken crude oil trains converging on Albany makes it a statistical certainty that there will be accidents in the Capital Region.

Most accidents will be minor with no oil spilling and no tanker cars exploding. But a fair number of accidents will be serious, with tanker cars punctured and spilled oil severely damaging, if not ruining, the environment.

And then there are the catastrophic accidents, with tanker cars derailing and exploding and great fireballs causing death and destruction on an unimaginable scale. The catastrophic accidents might be rare, but they do happen. And, on account of the volume of trains heading to the Port of Albany, they are going to happen here. We are playing Russian roulette with our lives and the health of the ecological systems that support us.

All the talk about upgraded tanker cars and increased track inspections are the equivalent of making sure the gun containing the bullet is in optimal working order when it kills us. There is no viable alternative. We must stop the oil trains.
