DOT chief to visit site of ND oil train derailment

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is slated to come to the site of a fiery oil train derailment that happened in eastern North Dakota last December.

Foxx is slated to meet with local leaders Thursday and update the community on efforts to improve rail safety.

The crash happened on Dec. 30 when a train carrying soybeans derailed and caused the train carrying crude oil to jump the tracks. There were no injuries, but residents were asked to evacuate because of smoke that drifted over Casselton when several rail cars burned.

The derailment highlighted worries about shipping crude by rail and led to aTransportation Department safety alert warning about the potential high volatility of crude from the rich oil fields of western North Dakota and eastern Montana.
