Petition Governor Cuomo to reroute the DOT-111 rail car carrying hazardous material
In the past two years Albany has gone from receiving almost no crude oil shipments to approximately 200 rail cars carrying 6 million gallons of highly explosive crude every day. These rail cars carrying the oil are called DOT-111’s and US regulators have known for 20 years that they are not suitable for flammable cargo. Originally used to haul such substances as corn syrup, the regulators have done nothing to require a safer railcar. A member of the National Safety Transportation Board has stated these rail cars carrying the Bakken crude from North Dakota are an “unacceptable public risk,"
Governor Cuomo, I call upon you to immediately reroute the unit trains of DOT 111’s away from all populated areas in New York unless the federal government and the oil industry can find a safe way to transport this hazardous substance.
