Tell President Obama: Stand up to Big Oil and stop exploding oil trains!

Petition to Anthony Foxx, Department of Transportation Secretary and President Barack Obama

The streets were a "river of fire" and "the whole sky was burning." That's how citizens of Lac-Mégantic, Canada described the scene after an oil train derailed and exploded in their downtown last summer.  47 people died that night.

Over the last several years, the oil and rail industries have brought the growing threat of hazardous, flammable oil trains into the Main Streets and downtowns of millions of Americans.

The Department of Transportation’s new draft safety rules on the rail transport of extremely volatile and flammable crude oil must be strong, enforceable, and protect all Americans -- not Big Oil's profits.

After a record year of oil trains exploding, derailing, and spilling, it's time to stand up to Big Oil before the next disaster strikes.

I live right near a major transport route in rural NY and I can tell you I no longer love the sound of trains rumbling by! The threat is very real to me and our bridges look like they can barely hold up a truck! Stop this madness before it is too late … again!

We have freight route 500 ft from our homes – we do not want hazardous materials and oil tankers going through our neighborhood!!

We live less than a quarter mile from the railroad track where we see this “pipeline” nearly every day.

We live right near the oil train tracks which pass through 11 towns in Bergen County, NJ. We have a Coalition to Ban Unsafe Oil Trains.

The US DOT Secretary Foxx already declared in an Emergency Order that the transport of crude oil by rail in the U.S. of A. is an imminent hazard, as defined by law – 49 U.S.C. 5102(5).
