It has been a year since a crude oil train crashed in Quebec, killing 47 people and destroying dozens of buildings.
Mothers in the area came together on the anniversary to protest shipments of the same kind of fuel being carried by train through Rochester. The women met near the tracks at North Main and Railroad Streets in Fairport.
Protesters say the oil being carried is highly explosive, and people need to know more about these trains before they transport oil across New York.
“People are not aware that these trains are coming through our communities in Rochester, Fairport, Pittsford, Utica, Syracuse, Buffalo and Albany. We want to raise awareness and let people know that these trains are extremely dangerous, highly flammable and not sufficiently regulated,” said Neely Kelley, against crude oil trains.
Local, state and federal officials have called for stricter standards for these crude oil shipments.
